Can family photos help your childs self-esteem

How are family photos and your child’s self-esteem related? Parenting is rewarding right but definitely not an easy job! It’s tough. Nowadays we are faced with so much information about how to raise our children. Not too much of this, be consistent, give them enough playtime outdoors, stay active – it pulls us in different directions every day.

In today’s modern world our children are overloaded with various forms of media that provide the added pressure of childhood making them feel they need to look a certain way, be part of a certain group, act a certain way, eat this, wear that…what must this feel like for them? As a parent, this can be a tricky one to counter. I don’t have the answers (I wish) but as a parent, I think the best thing we can do is show our children they are loved, they are beautiful just the way they are and they matter for who they are.

And I bet on more than one occasion, as a parent, you have thought about how you can build your child’s confidence, and self-esteem. But have you ever thought about how photos can do just that? One major aspect of family photography, that we rarely consider, is how it can help us raise children with stronger confidence in their ability and work.

So how can family photography help with your child’s self-esteem?

It provides them with a sense of belonging and it tells them they are loved and cared about, it makes them feel important. I think family photos let children learn who they are and where they fit.

This generation is the most photographed generation but with the least amount of physical printed photos to show for it. Knowing that photographs can play a big part in providing a boost to a child’s self-esteem I truly believe printed images are so important. Yes, we all love digital and it’s the world we live in, we can’t escape that. But there’s something very special in having something physical to touch, feel and to see. It’s heart-warming to see the love, connection and miracle of our family every day. It’s great for us as adults too. You know “those” days we all have them. It might be a tough day and then you see that image on the wall, the joy, the happiness, the love and connection – it takes us back to that moment. And remind us what wonderful little humans we have created.

Full service

So many of my clients have told me lately that they purchased only digital files from their last professional photography session, and then go on to say that all their intentions went out the window and that USB is still sitting in the drawer or cupboard. They just can’t find the time or energy to do something with them or just don’t have a clue where to start or where to go. This is one reason why I love to provide finished printed products (along with digital files), like framed wall art, canvasses and albums. A full-service professional photographer provides you with more than just a memory, we guide you and help you with everything you need, from what to bring to the session, what to wear, to how best to display your photos within your home.

Children’s bedrooms

Hang your family photos throughout the house but don’t forget your children’s bedrooms so it can be among the last things they see before sleep and the first thing they may see before beginning their day. It tells them “we love you and care about you. You’re important”.

And more importantly, don’t put off the family photography. Don’t wait until you lose weight, your hair is longer, the children’s front teeth come through. There are so many excuses. Children love you for who you are.

I love the comment that children love you just the way you are … We often think that our parenting isn’t good enough, or we aren’t enough, yet the people that always think we are enough are our children and they are enough too. Thank you Mika! What a heart warming sentiment. xReplyCancel

I’m so glad you loved reading my blog post Sarah! And I totally agree with you, as a parent we should not be too hard on our selves and just embrace the unconditional love we have for our children and get from our children. xxxReplyCancel

Great blog post Mieke! I love your comment that this generation is the most photographed generation but with the least amount of physical printed photos to show for it, this is so true! Digitalisation is the future bit some things are better in the physical format indeed. We fall into the same trap, thousands of digital pictures on our hard drives but only a handful on the walls of our home! Food for thought, thanks for sharing!     ReplyCancel

Yes it does open our eyes right that we need to maybe sometimes enjoy the moment as well and not see things through the lens all the time and when we do make sure they get appreciated by printing the moments to enjoy every day of our lives! xReplyCancel
